Terrorist threat – Three people placed under arrest after a series of late night house searches

Three of the nine people arrested early on Saturday as part of a Prosecutor’s office terrorist inquiry have been remanded in custody. The suspects are Samir C, born on the 13th of January 1989, Moustapha B, born on the 14th of March 1976, and Jawad B, born on the 3rd of March 1987. The three men, of Belgian nationality, have been charged with attempted murder and participation in terrorist activities. The nine other people have been released after questioning, the federal Prosecutor’s office has said.

The three men were arrested last night at the same time investigators were searching 40 houses in Brussels, Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Schaerbeek, Antwerp, Koekelberg, Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, Evere, Forest, Watermael-Boitsfort, Ganshoren, Zaventem, Ninove, Wemmel, Fleurus, Tubize, and Liège.

They are acquaintances of the El Bakraoui brothers and Najim Laachraoui, the terrorists who blew up Brussels Airport and the Maelbeek on the 22nd of March. The suspects mentioned an attack this weekend during bugged conversations. They said they were planning to attack the fanzone on Place Rogier during the Red Devil’s game on Saturday afternoon. No weapons and explosions were found during the searches, despite the fact that 152 garages were searched.

The three men who have been remanded in custody will appear before the Brussels Council Chamber on Thursday.
