The price of electricity went down again in 2015 but Belgians saw their bills go up due to increases in additional charges such as taxes and distribution costs, according to the joint energy regulators’ report, published on Thursday. The price of electricity supplied to households decreased by 11% last year, while that of natural gas went down by 14%. However, when all other components of the energy bill were added, Belgian households paid 233 euros per MWh for electricity, which was 17% more than in 2014. On the other hand, their natural gas bills dropped by 8% to 57.5 euros per MWh.
Belgium’s prices are catching up with those of its neighbours even though, by late December 2015, gas meant for household use was still 3% lower than the average for neighouring countries.
The prices of electricity and gas supplied to small and medium-sized companies went down by 10% and 13% respectively in 2015, but these companies still ended up paying 2% more on their electricity bills, while their gas payments were 8% lower than in 2014.
