Flanders aims to add 280 windmills and 6.4 million solar panels by 2020

The Flemish Government has approved an energy plan that aims to have an additional 280 windmills and 6.4 million solar panels installed in Flanders by the year 2020. The idea is "a solar panel for every Flemish person », according to Bart Tommelein, Energy Minister in the Flemish Government. « It’s ambitious, but not unrealistic, » he commented.

Flanders’ climate-protection plans include generating 10.3% of its energy from renewable sources. The Government aims to increase solar-power generation by 31% compared to 2014, wind power by 39% and heat recovery by 1%, while reducing the role of biomass plants.

Minister Tommelein has been drafting implementation plans to achieve these objectives. The solar plan has already been submitted, wind energy should follow by the end of this year, while the heat recovery plan’s submission has been programmed for early 2017.
