Payment by smartphone activated from this summer at bulk of Belgian shops

Payment by smartphone will be possible at the majority of Belgian shops using the mobile payment solution SmartPay from Worldline. This has been confirmed today (Thursday) by the electronic payment network manager.

Already available in 130 department stores, the service operates using the application Bancontact. This gives it access to 99% of users of the card of the same name. It will soon be on hand in numerous major brands and other shops across the country.

Small shops may activate SmartPay for free on their payment terminal. Transaction costs are identical to card payment costs, Worldline states. For four months, transactions for amounts of less than 5 euros will be free.

To make a payment, the customer must open the application Bancontact, scan a QR code on the shop’s terminal and validate both the total and the shop name by entering his card PIN code.

This payment solution is already paying off at Krëfel, A.S.Adventure, and some Inno outlets in Brussels. Some Delhaize shops from the Delhaize brand. It is also likely to be rolled out in all Peugeot dealerships. Over the next few months, it will also be possible to pay in this way at JBC, Quick, Decathlon, Menatam (Eggo Kitchen), Veritas and all Inno shops.
