Excessive rainfalls at the end of May in Comines-Warneton recognized as public disasters

The Walloon government proceeded Thursday to recognize as public calamities the abundant rainfall of the storms of May 29th and 30th which affected the community of Comines-Warneton, in the Western Hainaut. Following the publication of this order of recognition in Moniteur, the citizens will have until the end of October to present an application for indemnity from disaster funds.

Those who have suffered damages must first always contact their insurance company, for the disaster funds are only auxiliary for non-insurable goods at first risk. Wallonia witnessed at least nine violent storm events in the months of May and June. These storms were accompanied by very intense local precipitation, sometimes with hail and extreme winds.

These climatic conditions caused floods through the concentration of flows or due to the overflowing of rivers, causing considerable damage to homes and roads. Three of these events have already been recognized as public disasters by the Walloon government.
