The number of self-employed businesses rocketed by 20% between 2000 and 2015, reaching 704,373 last year. This is reported in L’Echo today (Thursday). The number of start-ups has leapt up by 91% over the same period, but bankruptcies have seen a spike of 51%.

An increase of 61% in the share of self-employed assets has been recorded over fifteen years, after deducting pension assets.

The business daily, which collected these figures from a combination of the Union for the Middle Classes, Inasti (which makes social security provision for the self-employed), the Belgian National Pension Office and the Federal Agency for Family Allowances, explain such good performances regarding business start-ups. They say that the main reason is the improved frameworks for self-employed status since the beginning of the century.
