Around 435,000 households do not have a broadband internet connection. They are mainly in Wallonia. The European Commission wants every household to be connected by 2020, De Zondag reported on Sunday.

The majority of households with no internet connection are in Wallonia (406,860), according to figures released by the Federal minister for Digital technology, Alexander De Croo (Open VLD). This was in response to a question from MP Roel Deseyn (CD&V). “Mr De Croo and providers will have to work hard to achieve this”, said Mr Deseyn.

There is less internet in rural areas as “it is less profitable for providers”, the MP said.

“We want precision work, without all the cables underground. There are techniques available that will give a household mobile internet or a satellite. But this needs to happen, the internet is a basic right”.
