Geert Bourgeois: “Compared to the People’s Union, the New Flemish Alliance is a friendship club”
Geert Bourgeois reasserted his view of his party's behaviour on Radio 1 today (Tuesday)

The Flemish Minister-President Geert-Bourgeois (of the New Flemish Alliance) is calling upon his members not to clash. This comes after several weeks of debate around the burkini in Flanders. However, he refutes the idea that his party has become one where open arguments rage openly. “Compared to the People’s Union, the New Flemish Alliance is a friendship club,” he affirmed today (Tuesday) on Radio 1.

The New Flemish Alliance considered yesterday (Monday), during a party meeting, that a general initiative banning the burkini in public places was going too far and was anyhow impossible to achieve from a legal viewpoint.

Geert Bourgeois is sorry that his party members have expressed divergent opinions in the media in recent weeks. He says, with hindsight, the debate around this subject should have taken place internally beforehand.

The Flemish Vice-President of the party, Liesbeth Homans had already regretted differences in an interview given during this summer and had compared the New Flemish Alliance to the Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats, for its contradictions, words which Geert Bourgeois considered “an exaggeration.”
