The State is expecting 547,435,318 million euros from people who received fines between 2012 and 2015, the Het Nieuwsblad, Het Belang van Limburg and Gazet van Antwerpen reported on Saturday. Over the last four years, judges have dealt out 915 million euros in fines, but just 368 million euros of that (40%) has been paid.
“There is very little chance we will get this money”, admits MP Sabien Lahaye-Battheu (Open Vld).
There are large differences between the regions: only 18% of fines were collected in Antwerp.
“Those collecting this money have to be more efficient”, says the Finance SPF spokesman.
Those that don’t pay could get smaller tax rebates, have their salary docked or lose part of their rental revenue.
