A study by the Federal Planning Bureau indicates that main lines will need to run four additional trains per hour by 2030.
La Dernière Heure has published the conclusions of this report today (Thursday). The number of passenger-kilometres travelled is on track to increase by 11% by 2030, when directly compared to 2012.
There are three main lines which are principally affected by this growth in traffic; Bruges-Ghent-Antwerp, Antwerp-Brussels and Aarschot-Hasselt-Montzen.
The main stations (at the North-Midi junction in Brussels, Antwerp, Liège, Ghent and Charleroi) will also endure a heavy volume increase at peak periods, during the next fifteen years or so.
The study says that the train system will transport 7.7% of people in Belgium in 2030, compared to 7.9% in 2012.
The use of other transport means, primarily the car, should consequently witness a heavy increase over the same time period.
