Close on one thousand victims of bankrupt attackers indemnified in 2015

The Commission for the Belgium's Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund paid out a total of 10.18 million euros to 991 victims in 2015. This is according to figures produced by the FPS Justice and reported in La Dernière Heure today (Thursday).

A total of 1,280 victims applied for assistance from this fund, which was originally instigated in 1985, after the highly publicised Brabant killings.

This fund is financed by all individuals sentenced to prison or criminal sentences in Belgium, up to a figure of 150 euros each.

It enables victims, whose attackers are bankrupt or who have insufficient financial means, to be fairly indemnified.

Since the Brussels attacks, the maximum payment available to victims has gone up to 125,000 euros, compared to the previous 62,000 euros.
