The car group Toyota announced today that it was recalling vehicles, as a precautionary measure, supplied in Japan, China, Europe and other countries. This is owing to potential problems with airbags supplied by Takata.

These vehicles are equipped with inflating mechanisms for driver and front passenger airbags containing non-dehydrated phase-stabilised ammonium nitrate, as the inflating agent.

The Japanese manufacturer explains in a communiqué, “The supplier, Takata, says that a security failure may occur with the inflating mechanisms owing to a deterioration of the inflating agent following prolonged exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperature and large magnitude freezing and melting cycles.”

It goes on, “These conditions may lead to a rupture of the inflating mechanism during airbag deployment.”

It further says, “The activation of the inflating mechanism with non-dehydrated degraded ammonium nitrate may lead to high-speed projections of metal fragments through the airbag, and within the passenger compartment of the vehicle.”

Within Belgium and Luxembourg 3,535 Hilux models, 18,427 Yaris models, 2.223 Corollas and 12.874 Auris cars are affected by the recall, or a total of 37,059 vehicles.

These were manufactured between May 2000 and November 2001 and between April 2006 and December 2014, states Toyota Belgium.

All individuals known to own these vehicles will be contacted by registered post.

Depending upon the vehicle model, Toyota dealerships will replace the inflating mechanisms for front driver and passenger airbags, simply by a new inflating mechanism or a completely new airbag unit, either being free of charge.
