Nearly 70 teachers on sick leave in 2015 following assaults in the workplace
The modern teacher has to endure a very tough environment.

In 2015, 68 teachers were signed off on sick leave following an attack. This is according to figures from the FPS Public Health quoted today (Friday) by La Dernière Heure. Amongst these attacks, were 16 solely verbal attacks and a further 18 (both physical and verbal), by parents of pupils.

However, not every incident is systematically reported by teachers and does not necessarily result in sick leave.

Joseph Thonon, the General Secretary of the CGSP-Enseignement (one of the teachers' trade unions) says, “Teachers’ working conditions have had a tendancy to deteriorate in recent years.”

Thonon goes on, “An aggravating factor is the significance of turnover in so-called ‘difficult’ schools.”
