Accident involving stray pony on the E40 at Merelbeke

A stray pony was knocked over on Sunday, shortly before 5 p.m., on the E40 motorway between Brussels and Ghent. The accident led to traffic congestion in both directions, the Flemish Centre for Traffic Congestion has indicated.

The Centre has, moreover, advised that the area should be avoided.

There is only one traffic lane open heading towards Ghent, with current waiting times of up to one hour.

In the other direction, curiosity around the incident is at the heart of traffic queues of up to 30-minutes. This is the explanation given by Peter Bruyninckx of the Flemish Centre for Traffic Management.

Bruyninckx advises drivers coming from Hasselt, and heading for Ghent, to go via Antwerp.

The Flemish Centre for Traffic Management is stating that rain caused a number of accidents yesterday (Sunday).

It is consequently advising drivers to adjust their speeds accordingly and to maintain an appropriate distance from other vehicles.

The police have requested that the speed around Antwerp should thus be limited to 90 kilometres per hour.
