Donald Trump victory – Six Belgian entrepreneurs in ten are worried about negative consequences

A poll by the Neutral Union for Independents (SNI) has shown that 64% of Belgian entrepreneurs are worried that Donald Trump’s election as President of the United States will have a negative influence on the Belgian economy. Only 10% of Belgian entrepreneurs would have voted for Donald Trump if they were American. Only one entrepreneur in five believes the new US President will moderate his attitude and political propositions when he gets to the White House.

Donald Trump’s election was a big surprise to Belgian entrepreneurs: just 7% believed he would win the race to the White House. 10% of the Independents and small business managers asked would have voted for the Republican candidate, 48% for Hilary Clinton.

The new American President, who is also an entrepreneur, was far from Belgian entrepreneur’s favourite candidate, according to SNI President Christine Mattheeuws. Two thirds of those asked didn’t want Donald Trump to be elected President. They are worried that his economic policy, and in particular his desire to protect the American economic market, will have a negative impact on the Belgian economy.

This fear was most strongly expressed by small businesses that export (83%). Only 4% of Belgian entrepreneurs think that Trump’s policy will be good for the global and Belgian economies.

“After Brexit earlier in the year, Trump’s election is the second important international event that will influence the global and Belgian economies. Businesses face uncertain times”, the SNI President explained.

The SNI poll took place from Wednesday to Saturday. Around 767 Independents and small business managers took part.
