Man receives suspended sentence for possession of mass paedophile pornography images

The Charleroi Criminal Court yesterday (Wednesday) sentenced a forty-year-old to 12-months suspended prison sentence for possession of thousands of paedophile pornographic images. The case was uncovered by Civil Protection following a flood at the accused's flat.  The accused explained that he lived as a hermit in a virtual world, essentially dominated by video games.

Upon entering the property, a Civil Protection agent noted a pornographic film running on a loop on the occupant's computer at the premises.

This featured a prepubescent child. The investigation was able to uncover that the forty-year-old possessed tens of thousands of photos and paedophile pornographic images, that he uploaded onto the sharing site Emule.

Some even featured babies.

Appearing before the Charleroi Criminal Court, the individual explained that he lived as a recluse, with no social contact outside of his work.

His isolation was characterised by delving into the virtual world and video games.

“In uploading these images, I did not realise that these children were themselves genuine victims,” he acknowledged to the hearing.

His barrister stressed, in mitigation, his difficult childhood and his problems of being isolated, requesting a suspended sentence. She said that the accused was the only one capable of extricating himself from his hermit situation.

Yesterday, the court sentenced the forty-year-old to a 12-month suspended sentence, as well as a six-month suspended sentence for several fire arms.
