Judge-imposed penalties will be higher from January
Judge-imposed fines are on the increase.

Judge-imposed criminal penalties, will be significantly higher from January 1st, La Dernière Heure and Het Laatste Nieuws write today. This is confirmed by the Office for the Minister of Justice, Koen Geens.

The fine imposed by a judge currently uses a multiplier of six. From January 1st, this factor will be multiplied by eight.

Driving whilst using your mobile will cost an additional 40 euros. Driving whilst under the influence of alcohol will cost an additional 400 euros.

This proportionate increase will apply to all fines imposed such as punishment for offences, whether environmental, under the remit of social legislation, tax law and driving offences and indeed others.

A parliamentary question from Sabien Lahaye-Battheu (Open Vld) made known the aspect of the multiplier increasing from six to eight.
