400,000 Belgians quids in with cycling indemnity scheme in 2015
Cyclists pedal their way to a state indemnity.

More than 400,000 Belgians received a cycling indemnity for using their bike to get to work. In total, some 93 million euros have been paid. This is reported in De Tijd today (Thursday).

In 2015, 406,000 workers received a cycling indemnity. This emerges from a response by the Minister for Finances, Johan Van Overtveldt (New Flemish Alliance), to a parliamentary question by the deputy Georges Gilkinet (Francophone Greens).

Since 2011, figures indicate the number of individuals benefiting from the cycling indemnity has increased by 30%.

These indemnities are deductible for these businesses, passing a cost on to the state 93.3 million euros, or an increase of 50% compared to 2011.

If the cost has increased more quickly than the number of beneficiaries from the scheme this is because distances travelled by cyclists are longer.

The cycling indemnity depends upon the number of kilometres travelled.
