The fire which took place over Tuesday night to Wedneday morning in premises of the Kurdish cultural area of Gilly in Charleroi, can only be condemned. This is because it was an attack on property whilst threatening human lives, reacted the spokeswomen from Charleroi City Council yesterday.
Around 2 p.m. on Wednesday morning, individuals broke a window in the Kurdish cultural area, specifically on the Chaussée de Fleurus in Gilly.
They threw a molotov cocktail, which set fire to the premises targeted. Although two people, one of whom was the Imam, living on the first floor escaped on time, the fire caused significant damage.
The federal police laboratory arrived at the scene looking for evidence confirming the presence of accelerant products. These would provide additional evidence of the criminal nature of the fire.
The federal spokesman for Belgium's Turkish community says this is clearly a politically motivated act.
Reacting to this fire on Wednesday evening, the Charleroi City Council spokeswoman stressed the intolerable nature of an act that, whatever the cause, endangered lives and damaged property.
Although it falls to the relevant investigation to establish those responsible, increased vigilance is necessary around property in troublesome areas.
This is all the more so taking account of police resources, it added.
