Belgium supports initiatives taken to set up an “international legal system” to try Syrian war crimes. This was indicated yesterday (Thursday) by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Didier Reynders, to parliament. The discussion arose in response to a multitude of questions upon the martyred city of Aleppo.
Mr Reynders stressed, “Belgium has requested that evidence be collected upon Aleppo “as there can be no question of war crimes, and maybe worse, going unpunished.”
The Minister also repeated Belgium's position on the future of the Syrian President Bachar El-Assad. He stated, “Human torture of El-Assad's people is not on the table as a solution.”
The Head of Belgian diplomacy stated, moreover, that Belgium is ready to get involved in European humanitarian initiatives.
In particular, this includes the opening up of a humanitarian corridor, even if this will only be possible with an agreement of the United Nations Security Council.
