Berlin Attack: No new measures in Belgium

No new measures will be introduced to beef up security at year-end events in Belgium; however, each of these events is being permanently monitored, the National Security Council, comprising the Belgian Government and heads of security and intelligence services, decided on Wednesday, the cabinet of the Prime Minister disclosed. The National Security Council’s meeting had been programmed a long time ago, and was not held specifically because of Monday’s truck battering ram attack on the Christmas Market in Berlin. Interior Minister Jan Jambon had already indicated on Monday evening that the threat level would remain at 3, which designates a risk that is serious, likely, but not imminent.

The measures that had already been taken by the Crisis Centre in consultation with the local authorities have been confirmed.
