Europe has decided to ratchet up a gear in the fight against drug trafficking.
In its new strategy for 2025, the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) intends to use all new available technologies.
The daily newspaper, Le Soir states today (Wednesday), that the agency in particular intends to rely upon hackers' expertise and former drug traffickers online to better monitor activity on the “Dark web”.
The EMCDDA will recruit types of so-called “gamekeepers” who are able to infiltrate the hidden side of the Internet, over which illegal substances and weapons change hands.
“We will clearly need to rely upon former criminals or criminals who are currently not operating,” the Belgian, Alexis Goosdeel, who directs the organisation said. He was speaking in the Belgian publication.
Moreover, the agency's 2025 strategy provides a quicker, more efficient response to new synthetic drugs. At the current time, any substance which is not on the banned list is de facto legal.
Mr Goosdeel stresses, the need to act quicker in the face of emerging substances and “develop information and analysis tools necessary to identify new developments.”
