King Philippe gave financial support of 200 euros to 769 Belgians in 2016. Nearly 520 individuals benefited from such a boost in 2015.

The increase is partly explained by the fact that letters received in December 2015 were actually only dealt with in 2016, the Royal Palace of Brussels indicated yesterday.

The King received nearly 50,000 letters last year, a figure which has remained stable.

These were not solely requests for social support but also individuals who wished to tell their life history, mention a jubilee or detail other aspects. Of these 50,000 letters, nearly 11,000 cover something of a social nature.

The palace's “social” arm deals with such social requests and often sends particular cases to the Public Welfare Service.

Only a small proportion of letters contain an explicit request for financial support. The latter is granted after a “social” enquiry.

Finally, 769 Belgians received a single gift of 200 euros in 2016, being a total of around 154,000 euros. In 2015, the King had responded favourably to nearly 520 of these letters for a total amount close to 104,000 euros.
