A baby was found in the road yesterday evening (Monday) in Wijnegem, in the Antwerp province. This is indicated in the Flemish newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws today (Tuesday). The newspaper states that the child may have been taken from its mother on Friday, during a violent scene in Estinnes-au-Mont (Estinnes).

Johan Wonink, a spokesman from the local police, contacted by the Belga press agency said, “A baby has been found and it is possible that this is the same one. It is not 100% certain. it will be for the Public Prosecutor’s Office to confirm this.”

The child was discovered around 11 p.m. on the Merksemsebaan, a frequently used road, outside of the centre of Wijnegem. He was taken to hospital, but was not in poor health.

Yesterday, the Charleroi Public Prosecutor’s Office stated that police were looking for a 5-month old baby, after it had been taken on Friday evening in Estinnes-au-Mont.

The baby’s mother had suffered a machete blow to the face. The two suspects, two brothers aged 23 and 25 one of whom is the mother’s ex-partner, have been arrested for questioning.
