Company bicycles could encourage employees to cycle to work more often

If employers provided company bicycles, it might encourage nearly half (48%) of employees who sporadically cycle to work to do so more often. This is according to an inquiry by VAB, the “Bike to Work programme and Janssen Pharmaceutica, which was released on Saturday. They spoke to 3,500 people who regularly or occasionally cycle to work.

The increasing popularity of electric bicycles and the appearance of the “speed pedelec” (a speedy electric bicycle) have also led to cycling becoming more popular. The proportion of electric bicycles used to travel to work and back is 16%, according to the VAB.

Six employees in ten that rarely use a bike think the electric bicycle would encourage them to cycle more, especially as it allows them to cover longer distances. 81% of the employees that use a normal bicycle travel up to 10 kilometres to work, while 88% of cyclists that use an electric bicycle do twice that distance.
