Minister Marghem wants to relax Belgium's climate ambitions

Minister of the Environment, Marie-Christine Marghem (Reformist Movement), wants to ease the Belgian climate ambitions and intends to negotiate at the European level, Mediahuis reported on Tuesday. Belgium is currently committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2030, but this ambition is exaggerated according to the minister. She intends to have discussions with the European institutions to ease this objective.

"The European Commission takes too little account of the fact that we are a transit country with a lot of foreign heavy weights and an aging infrastructure", said Marie-Ange Dhondt, spokesman for the Federal Minister. "That is why we have to negotiate at the European level to lower this target of 35%."
