Soignes Forest recognised as a UNESCO world heritage site

Part of Soignes Forest has been recognised as a UNESCO world heritage site, the Flemish President-Minister Geert Bourgeois and Environment Minister Joke Schauvliege announced on Friday. The decision was made during a World heritage Committee convention in Warsaw.

“This is excellent news”, the Walloon Minister for Nature, René Collin, told the Belga agency. He sees this recognition as “proof that collaboration between the three regions can get results when it comes to preserving communal heritage”.

Soignes Forest borders the three regions (Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia), so the regions needed to work together to submit a joint application for UNESCO recognition.
