Doel 4 goes into automatic shut down

Reactor number 4 at the Doel nuclear plant went into automatic shutdown a little before 4am on Sunday. The information appeared on the Engie group’s “Transparency” internet site.

It shut down after a warning light didn’t go off at the end of a routine trimestral test. This was to check the plant’s automatic security systems were working properly, a spokesman for the plant said.

The spokesman said the reactor should be ready to start up again over the course of the day on Sunday.

The incident happened in the non-nuclear part of the plant and there was “no threat to the safety of the surrounding areas, or to staff and installations at the plant”, a worker at the site said.

Doel 4 has a 1,039 MW capacity.
