Four Belgian universities in the top 200 of Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018

Four Belgian universities (KU Leuven, Ugent, and the two French-speaking institutions - the Catholic University of Leuven - UCL - and the Free University of Brussels - ULB) feature in the Top 200 best universities in the world for 2018. The 14th edition of the annual World University Rankings 2018, the specialist Times Higher Education magazine is dominated, as last year, by the University of Oxford. The University of Cambridge scoops second place (4th last year), followed by the California Institute of Technology and Stanford University.

On the basis of performance indicators such as teaching, research, scientific publications and international perspectives, the magazine has drawn up a listing of 1,000 universities from 77 countries.

KU Leuven takes 47th place in the rankings and is thus considered as the best university in the country. Last year, this university scooped 40th place. The University of Ghent (UGent) went from 118th to 107th place. The French-speaking Catholic University of Leuven (UCL) remains in 129th place, whilst the ULB appears in the top 200 of the rankings in 175th place.

Below we have set out the top 10 ranked institutions for the 2018 rankings, giving their position during the previous ranking in brackets:

  3. (2) California Institute of Technology (USA);
  4. (3) Stanford University (USA);
  5. (5) Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA);
  6. (6) Harvard University (USA);
  7. (7) Princeton University (USA);
  8. (8) Imperial College London (GB);
  9. (10) University of Chicago (USA);
10.= (9) ETH Zurich (Switzerland); and
10.= (13) University of Pennsylvania (USA).

In addition, the equivalent rankings for 2018 (and 2017 in brackets) of the top four Belgian universities were 47. (40) University of Leuven, 107. (118) University of Ghent, 129. (128) Catholic University of Leuven (French-speaking) and 175. (201-205) Free University of Brussels (French-speaking).
