About 40 persons were evacuated on Thursday afternoon in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode under an emergency and evacuation plan activated by the municipality after a burst water main created a 36-square-metre sinkhole on Louvain Road, the police of the North Zone (Schaerbeek, Evere, Saint-Josse-ten-Noode) reported. “Because of the instability of the ground, caused by the burst pipe, the mayor of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode decided, as a precautionary measure, to activate the emergency and evacuation plan,” the North Zone police stated.
“Twenty-five children from the ‘P’tit Boule’ creche, situated on the Louvain Road, have thus been evacuated and placed in another creche in the commune,” the police added. “Twenty other persons have been lodged in the shelter opened in the Guy Cudell Omnisport Room on Deux Eglises Street.”
A safety perimeter has been set up on Louvain Road, which is closed to traffic between Saint-Josse and Meiser squares. Traffic has been diverted.
