On Wednesday, the Prime Minister, Charles Michel, met the President of the Republic of Estonia. Noteworthy meeting agenda items included the European Union and the relationship with Russia, Estonia’s large neighbour.

As reported yesterday, four F-16s from the Belgian army have currently been dispatched to Estonia. They are there contributing to securing the air space above the Baltic states against the potential threat from Russia.

Along with Latvia and Lithuania, Estonia has no air force and depends upon assistance from NATO partners in this regard. The Estonian president thanked Belgium on Wednesday for its assistance in that respect.

Since the crisis in the Ukraine began,  relations between the European Union and Russia have deteriorated. Whilst maintaining an open dialogue, the EU has imposed a number of sanctions.

The Prime Minister and the Estonian President consider that discussions with Russia should not only revolve around strategic interests, but also the values held by all stakeholder countries. Kersti Kaljulaid also expressed her appreciation for the role Belgium has played in the deepening of relations within the European Union.
