Port of Antwerp: more than 30 tonnes of cocaine seized this year
Globally, the Port of Antwerp is seen as the most popular location for importing the white powder.

Some 31 tonnes of cocaine have been seized thus far in 2017 in the Port of Antwerp. According to the Mediahuis publications, writing on Wednesday, this is a record. The federal police are agreeing next year to pay particular attention to this problem.

Except for 2012, the quantity of cocaine intercepted in the port of Antwerp has increased every year. In 2017, 31 tonnes have so far been seized, with an estimated value of €1.55 billion euros.

The Port of Antwerp is perceived, on the international stage, as the most popular location for importing the white powder. In contast, in the city of Rotterdam, notably, the port is automated, which reduces the risks of such imports.

The Director of the Federal Police in Antwerp had already raised the alarm in September, and demanded an inter-agency plan for better cooperation between all of the stakeholder services. This plan will be presented in January by the Minister of the Interior, Jan Jambon.
