Belgian efforts insufficient to meet sustainable development objectives

Belgian efforts insufficient to meet sustainable development objectives
Marie-Christine Marghem would like to see swift action, to ensure Belgium's trajectory for sustainable development is placed on an improved footing.

Belgium will not be in a position to meet the objectives which it has promised to meet by 2030, if a series of policies are not improved. This is the view of Federal Planning Bureau cited by Le Soir on Wednesday.

The Federal Planning Bureau summarised the 17 “global objectives for sustainable development”, adopted in 2015 by the UN. It emerges that the pace of improvement of the situation in Belgium is not sufficient. Moreover, current projections by the Federal Planning Bureau show that the 2030 objectives for poverty and energy efficiency will not be met. These projections also show that the trajectory is not on a particularly good course for renewable energy sources, greenhouse gas emissions and the significance of the car as a means of transport.

The responsible minister, Marie-Christine Marghem (MR), the federal Minister for Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development, will now write to her government colleagues. This is in the hope that the Michel government can propose “effective action” by the end of the legislature. She is also promising a so-called “mini-federal plan” for sustainable development - the last such plan covered the period 2008 to 2012 - before the end of this parliament. She says that there will also be a properly structured plan in the next legislature.
