Dutch parliament can now discuss Doel and Tihange with AFCN
Numerous questions around the safety of the two Belgian nuclear power stations have been raised, as much in the Dutch parliament as in the Netherlands’ border area with Belgium.

The Dutch parliament has been given the green light from Belgium to be able to have discussions with the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (known as the “AFCN”). This is regarding the Belgian nuclear power stations Doel and Tihange. The Minister for the Interior, Jan Jambon, is thought to have confirmed this authorisation with the Netherlands on Tuesday. This was indicated on Wednesday by the Dutch secretary of state, Stientje van Veldhoven, whose remit includes energy.

A multitude of questions concerning the safety of the two Belgian nuclear power stations have been raised recently, as much in the Dutch parliament as in the Dutch border area with Belgium. The Dutch Lower House has already demanded the closure of the Doel and Tihange power stations. The Dutch secretary of state says, "However, there is no judicial route to enable us to force this closure.”

However, she says that Minister Jambon has expressed his wish to collaborate with the Netherlands on this issue. This is in removing doubts which remain within the border region. The Dutch secretary of state says that Jan Jambon has had a clear message, “We are not simply playing a game with nuclear safety [in respect of these two power stations]."
