Collection of Xmas trees under way in Brussels, starts Monday in Wallonia

The collection of Christmas trees will begin in Wallonia on Monday 8 January. There is no special collection of fir trees in Brussels; residents of the region can put them out with their garden waste on their designated days.

Garbage collection services stress that households may also take their trees, stripped of all decorations, directly to the recycle parks.

The various garbage collection services in Wallonia and Brussels stress that natural firs must first be stripped of their decorations, pots, nails or clumps of soil. For its part, the region’s sanitation service, Bruxelles Propreté, accepts Xmas tree stands, while in Wallonia the stands must be removed before the firs are taken to the recycle park. In Liège, the firs will be picked up on the weekly collection day between the 8th and 12th of January.

The inter-communal service for collecting and recycling household waste in the Charleroi area, ICDI, has posted the pick-up days for each town on its Internet website.

In the Mons-Borinage-Centre area, the inter-communal environment management service, Hygea, is not organizing any specific pick-ups for Christmas trees, but recalls that municipalities such as Mons, La Louvière, Seneffe, Soignies and Ecaussinnes are organizing such pick-ups for their residents. It thus advises area residents to seek information from their municipal administrations.

A timetable is available for individuals in Namur Province on the website of Environnement Namur.

The recycle parks are also an alternative to pick-ups. People may drop off their trees, duly stripped of adornment, soil etc., at these parks. Because of the storm alert, which is still valid for Wednesday, Bruxelles Propriété is also asking residents not to drop off the firs on the evening before collection is due but rather on collection morning. Otherwise, the trees can be blown about and clog the streets.

Firs collected or dropped off at the container parks will be recycled. Mixed with other classic compost waste because of their acidity, they take about six months to decompose.
