New Flemish Alliance wishes to remove early retirement and limit periods of unemployment benefits

The New Flemish Alliance (“N-VA”) wishes to secure the removal of early retirement, so that job vacancies are filled. This is reported in Het Laatste Nieuws on Wednesday. The nationalists are also putting on the table their proposal aiming to limit the period of unemployment benefits.

There have never been as many job vacancies in Flanders, but one third of them are constantly available. In view of the above, the N-VA has formulated a series of proposals. The Flemish deputy, Axel Ronse, says the Flemish Office for Employment, known as VDAB, is doing everything necessary to find candidates seeking employment to fill these posts.

Howver federal measures, such as unemployment with a company supplement, formerly ‘early retirement’, constitute a brake upon this dynamic. He considers, “It almost amounts to perversity that the Employment Office should convince people to find work if they will then hardly earning more than the unemployment or early retirement benefits offered by the federal government.”

His federal colleague, the deputy Wouter Raskin, has decided to go on the attack with his proposal to limit the period for the receipt of unemployment benefit. Since the formation of the current government, this proposal has remained ‘on ice’ owing to the respective positions of the CD&V and the MR. The N-VA deputy sighs, “Perhaps in the meantime, opinion has matured in this regard.”
