De Tijd and L'Echo are reporting, on Tuesday, that the Privacy Commission has numerous criticisms as regards the royal decrees approved last month by the cabinet, around the central database for terrorists. The government wishes to extend the database to all forms of terrorism and extremism, and all types of inciting hatred, including both “potential” and “non-validated” cases. The current Privacy Commission considers that broadening the scope is not fully justified. In addition some key concepts, such as “inciting hatred” and indeed the term “hate”, in the present framework have no specific definition.
Moreover, the Commission is pondering the number of services which would be able to have access to this enlarged list of names. Its concern is all the more valid, given that it is not known with any degree of certainty which services will obtain access to these sensitive lists.
