Record year in the fight against fraud for the Special Tax Inspection Team

The Special Tax Inspection Team recuperated a record 2.1 billion euros last year, reports L’Echo and De Tijd. The figures have been confirmed by the Finance Minister Johan Van Overtveldt.

The Special Tax Inspection Team (ISI) has severely cracked down on tax fraud and issued fines and tax increases worth a record 2.1 billion euros.

That’s around 400 million euros more than in 2016 and double the figure for 2015. The team’s investigators also opened 1,352 cases last year, 28% more than the previous year. Van Overtveldt says the team’s excellent statistics are proof that his approach is working. “Both the amount we have claimed back and the number of cases opened are record highs. The provisional amounts we have claimed back look very promising, as do the ones for the year before. The investment in the ISI is clearly having an effect”.
