Belgium’s population will keep ageing until 2040

The ageing of Belgium’s population will intensify until 2040, after which it will stabilize, the Planning Office forecasts in its demographic projections for 2017-2070. The stabilization following the intensification will be due to the disappearance of the baby-boomer generation, born after World War II.

According to the forecasts, Belgium will have a population of 13.4 million in just over 50 years. This projection is based on a number of variables: net international migration – about 120,000 arrivals and 100,000 departures per year; a life expectancy of 90 years for women and 88 years for men by 2070; and an average female fertility rate of 190 children for every 100 women.
