In an interview on Sunday, the N-VA President and Antwerp mayor Bart De Wever told De Zondag that his opinion on immigration had not changed over the years. “Look at my speeches over the last thirty years. You see will a certain continuity. But because of false humanism from the Left, all the other speeches look bad”, he said.
He criticised entrapment from the Left. “These same Lefties who burned bras in May 68 now see the veil as a symbol of equality. I find that disturbing. They wanted to curb Christianity, but Islam is accepted. I call that submission.”
Mr De Wever said he is as critical of the Jewish community as he is of the Muslim one. “Orthodox Jews also see visible signs as important. But they accept the consequences. I’ve never seen an Orthodox Jew behind a counter. That’s the difference. Muslims demand acceptance of their visible signs of belief in public areas, education. That’s what creates tension.”
The interview also touched on his ambitions for the next election. He wants to remain the mayor of Antwerp for six more years, if he is re-elected. After the 2019 Federal elections, he is not excluding “governing with the PS, the PTB or Ecolo, if those parties accept the confederal structure.”
