Government relaunches work on RER in Hoeilaart

Prime Minister Charles Michel and Minister of Mobility François Bellot visited the RER project in Hoeilaart, Flemish Brabant, on Wednesday morning, accompanied by the chief executive officers of Infrabel and the NMBS/SNCB, Luc Lallemand and Sophie Dutordoir respectively. Work on the Regional Express Network, RER, has been officially relaunched.

Hoeilaart is on Line 161, Brussels-Ottignies, one of the two sections for which Infrabel, which manages the railway network, and its railway engineering branch, TUC Rail, will restart work to increase the numbeer of tracks to four. The other section is Brussels-Nivelles, Line 124.

Infrabel and SNCB have decided to work section by section for “the benefit of the clients” of the railway company.

Work will begin on Line 161, on the portion situated between the Watermael Station and the entrance to La Hulpe. The laying down of the four tracks, which will increase the frequency of the trains in this section, is expected to be completed by 2025.

A little after 11 a.m., the NMBS/SNCB and Infrabel officials, assisted by François Bellot and Prime Minister Michel, symbolically contributed to finalizing the placing of the rails.

One year ago, the Federal Government released a supplementary budget of one billion euro for continuing work on the RER. Civil engineering work on the railway was suspended about three years ago.
