Me Lys says Rue du Dries shooting set in motion Brussels attacks
Me Lys must show that his clients have suffered direct and personal harm.

Me Guillaume Lys, said on Thursday, “The attitude of the defendants [Salah Abdeslam and Sofien Ayari] precipitated the action of the El Bakraoui brothers, and Najim Laachraoui, on 22 March 2016.” The lawyer was demonstrating that the Brussels attacks victims’ association, which he represents, has an interest as a civil party against Salah Abdeslam and Sofien Ayari. Abdeslam and Ayari are currently appearing before the Brussels Criminal Court in the case of the shooting, which took place on Rue du Dries in Forest, on 15 March 2016, a few days before the Brussels attacks.

Lys, the lawyer for V-Europe, an association which brings together 200 victims of the Brussels attacks, spoke before the 90th division of the Brussels Criminal Court, on Thursday. His intention: to demonstrate that his request for the association being joined, as a civil party, in the trial “for the Rue du Dries shooting” is justified.

The lawyer mentioned that the armed resistance of Salah Abdeslam, Sofien Ayari and Mohamed Belkaïd (now deceased) when confronted by the police on 15 March 2016, on Rue du Dries, caused the actions carried out by Ibrahim El Bakraoui, Khalid El Bakraoui and Najim Laachraoui on 22 March 2016 in Brussels.

Thus, according to Me Lys, this demonstrates that there is a direct link between the harm suffered by the victims of the 22 March attacks and this shooting in Forest. The lawyer must show that his clients suffered direct and personal harm, and that they have a legitimate interest to take such civil action in the case of the shooting.
