Urgent repairs to the lighting fixtures in Antwerp's Kennedy tunnel took place in the Ghent direction, during the night of Monday through to Tuesday. The information has been released by the Flemish agency for traffic, Vlaams Verkeerscentrum. The right-hand traffic lane is again open in the Ghent direction.
The position is currently unchanged for the Netherlands direction: in this case the right-hand traffic lane will remain closed during Tuesday. There is therefore a significant risk of traffic jams on this carriageway in rush hour.
Drivers are advised to travel via Brussels to reach Ghent and Hasselt. The Liefkenshoek tunnel still has no toll imposed in the Netherlands direction, an aspect that no longer applies in the Ghent direction, which has regained its normal toll status.
In the Kennedy tunnel, urgent works are currently being carried out on the lighting fixtures, above the right-hand lane. The fixtures are still breaking away in several places. There remains a risk of debris falling onto the road surface.
The Kennedy tunnel is the most used tunnel in Flanders, with an average of 83,000 vehicles per day heading towards Gent, and 74,000 in the direction of the Netherlands.
