Walloon pupils studying in Flanders on the increase
The recent study for the University of Liège shows that 10,000 Walloon pupils are studying in Flanders, compared to 7,700 Flemish students in Wallonia.

Increasing numbers of Walloon pupils are being educated in Flemish schools. The Sudpresse publications are reporting upon the issue on Wednesday. In the secondary sector, the number has increased by 20% over the last 10 years.

In all, 10,000 Walloon pupils are studying in Flanders, compared to 7,700 Flemish students in Wallonia. The finding comes in the light of a study upon these so-called “crossovers” in Belgium, produced by Maxim Proesmans for the University of Liège. He is a doctoral research student at the university.

During the school year 2016 to 2017, 6,036 pupils originally from the south of the country, were enrolled in Flemish primary schools, with 3,838 such pupils in the secondary sector. The figures have remained stable for the primary sector, but as indicated above have increased by 20% for the secondary sector in 10 years.

There are 7,669 Flemish students in Wallonia. Moreover, numerous Flemish students are enrolled in French-speaking schools in the Brussels region (a total of 22,141). The Walloon provinces of Hainaut and Walloon Brabant are the most highly represented in terms of pupils in schools within Flanders.

To explain this increasing trend, Maxim Proesmans puts forward the appeal of studying the Dutch language, but also the findings from the Programme for International Student Assessment (“PISA”) survey. The survey indicated that pupils are able to receive a better schooling within the Flemish educational system than in Wallonia.
