Charles Michel speaks of his shock as to De Wever’s ideas around Mawda’s death
The Prime Minister has preferred to call for calm and await the results of the investigation.

The Prime Minister, Charles Michel, confirmed on Thursday that he had been “shocked” by the ideas expressed seven days ago by the President of New Flemish Alliance, Bart De Wever. The latter attributed responsibility to Mawda’s parents for the two-year-old’s death. She had been killed by a police bullet during a police chase.

The Prime Minister indicated, “Bart De Wever’s views shocked me”. Up until now, the Prime Minister has preferred to call for calm and await the results of the investigation.

However, the Prime Minister says that the ideas of the President of the New Flemish Alliance are not the only ones to have shocked him. He also cited those of the President of the PS, Elio Di Rupo, who speaks of the state being responsible and is also targeting, without naming her, the Co-President of Ecolo, Zakia Khattabi.

Mr Michel added, “There is no question for me of going to extremes.” He stressed his emotion when meeting the young victims parents. However, he refused to be drawn about the outcome of Mawda’s parents’ request for any form of settlement.
