Surveillance cameras at workplaces up by 7% in 2017

Orders for the installation of surveillance cameras at workplaces increased by 7.2%  to 1,129 requests in 2017, the Neutral and Independent Union (SNI) stated on Monday in a press release, quoting figures from the Data Protection Authority. The main reason businesses gave for installing the cameras was to guard against theft by employees. According to the SNI, which represents members of the liberal professions and small and medium-sized businesses, 40% of all thefts are committed by staff members.

"The use of surveillance cameras at the workplace has increased sharply in the past 10 years,” the union said. ”The installation of surveillance cameras at the workplace has become commonplace and cameras can be found in the most diverse sectors, ranging from retailing and the hotel, restaurant and bars sector to garages and the cabinets of members of the liberal professions. These cameras are the first means of fighting against thefts by staff members.”

Businesses that wish to install their cameras themselves should in any event consider a closed-circuit television that indicates what is authorized and what is prohibited, the union noted.
