Final consignment of vitrified radioactive intermediate-level waste returned Belgium
Some 19 containers of vitrified intermediate-level waste arrived in a warehouse on the Belgoprocess site in Dessel.

The second and last vitrified radioactive intermediate-level waste consignment brought from France to Belgium came on Wednesday morning. The news came in a joint communiqué by the Agency for Radioactive Waste and Enriched Fissile Materials (“ONDRAF”), the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (“AFCN”) and the companies Synatom and Belgoprocess.

Some 19 containers of vitrified intermediate-level waste arrived in a warehouse on the Belgoprocess site in Dessel (in the Antwerp province). They will be discharged in the coming weeks.

The communiqué stressed, “The second delivery of reprocessed waste has taken place within optimum safety conditions. This is the final consignment of vitrified radioactive intermediate-level waste.” The press release went on, “The return of waste, being spent nuclear fuel from Belgian nuclear power stations reprocessed in France, has therefore come to an end.”
