Big Jump: 1,600 people jump into open water for environmental awareness

Around 1,600 people jumped into open water on Sunday evening, as part of Belgium’s 17 “Big Jumps”. The organisers say the event is designed to raise awareness about water quality.

There were jumps at the Brussels-Charleroi canal in Anderlecht, as well as Han-sur-Lesse and Ghent. There were around 150 similar events in 20 European countries.

“The sun and party atmosphere during the build-up to the Big Jumps helped make this year’s event a success. There were no less than 1,600 jumpers and the thousands of supporters that turned up really livened it up. This event has become particularly important since 2005, when the European directive on water came into effect”, says Jo Van Cauwenberghe, the director of GoodPlanet Belgium (which organises the Big Jumps in Belgium).
