There were no serious incidents at Ghent festival on Saturday evening. Around 150,000 people travelled to the town centre for the second day of the festival. Authorities did say fake 20-euro notes had been used at the festival.
There were again no incidents during the second day of the festival. “We counted 150,000 people”, says Festival Councillor Christophe Peeters (Open VLD). “That’s the same as the second day last year”.
Several witnesses did report fake 20-euro notes being used. “People bring their own money every year. We have asked organisers to remain vigilant”, Mr Peeters says.
Around 18,500 football fans also watched the Belgium-England World Cup third place playoff on Saturday afternoon. "There was not much to report” says police spokesman Matto Langeraert. “81 people were fined for urinating in public and 12 people were arrested for public drunkenness or disturbing the peace”.
Firefighters had to put out three rubbish bin fires. “The fires weren’t started deliberately, they were caused by cigarette ends or the heat”, according to Christophe Peeters.
There was also a firework display at 11pm on Sunday evening.
