No incidents during Geert Wilders' visit to Antwerp

There were no incidents during Geert Wilders’ visit to Antwerp. Geert Wilders is the leader of the extreme right in the Netherlands. Accompanied by members of Vlaams Belang, he left flowers at the foot of the statues of William of Orange and Filips van Marnix van Sint-Aldegonde, the mayor of Antwerp during the Spanish army’s siege of the town in 1585.

There were a lot of police present to ensure security, as OCAM raised the threat level from 2 to 3 in the city on Sunday. Traffic on the Place Théâtre was blocked and was being monitored by a helicopter flying overhead.

Geert Wilders and Filip Dewinter then spoke to several dozen supporters. Only one counter-demonstrator brandished a banner that said “Antwerp is for everyone”.
